But when he was taken into custody, officers found little parcels falling out the back of his shorts.

They also noticed the smell of cannabis when searching the 49-year-old, The Mirror reported.

Heroin addict McCarten was found to have 6.3g of of heroin, 23g of cannabis, 32g of cannabis resin and six mini mobiles in a seven-inch package hidden in his bum.

Liverpool crown court heard how the total haul was worth almost £1,500 – yet McCarten insisted the drugs were for his use only.

Heroin addict McCarten, of no fixed address, had previously been jailed for six weeks for the theft of the TVs.

He also admitted trying to smuggle the drugs and phones into prison after initially claiming he had taken them as payment for the stolen TVs.

Defending, Julian Linskill said his client had spent the majority of his adult life in and out of jail but insisted this was a “one-off”.

Mr Justice William Davis jailed McCarten for four years.

He said: “Heroin in prison is endemic and is a huge problem, both in terms of the effects on the people who take it and the effects on discipline in the prison, because it is hard currency, in every sense of the word.

“You also had six phones, which again are hard currency in prison for those who want to continue their criminal operations from their prison cells.”
