Wayne Shaw agrees to resign at Sutton United over pie-eating controversy

Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has agreed to hand in his resignation after he ate a pie on the bench during Monday’s defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup.

The 46-year-old is under investigation from the Football Association and the Gambling Commission after he admitted to knowing that Sun Bets offered odds of 8/1 on him eating a pie during the game.

Under the FA rules, players, managers, officials and club staff are banned from *******, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition.

After Sutton United’s defeat, Sun Bets revealed that they paid out a ‘five-figure sum’ to someone who placed a wager on Shaw eating the snack at some point during the game.

‘It’s been very disappointing no doubt about that,’ Sutton United boss Paul Doswell told Sky News.

‘We woke up this morning to this storm of criticism and it’s something we’ve dealt with quickly as a club.

‘Wayne has offered his resignation and the chairman accepted this afternoon.

‘It’s a sad end to what was a very good story.

‘It’s clear in FA rules you are not allowed to bet and whether it was a fun bet or whatever it was it wasn’t acceptable.’

Shaw, who is known as the ‘roly-poly goalie’ due to his 23-stone frame, was Sutton’s reserve goalkeeper and coach.

‘I thought I would give them a bit of banter and let’s do it,’ he said before his resignation.

‘All the subs were on and we were 2-0 down. It was just a bit of banter for them.

‘It is something to make the occasion as well and you can look back and say it was part of it and we got our ticket money back.’
