Carshalton college student Jamal Woon lands music contract and will perform in America

Jamal, a music technology student, said: “I am absolutely thrilled. The publishing deal will become a platform and an opportunity to become even better.”

A Carshalton College student has landed a publishing deal with a BBC Radio DJ.

Multi-talented Jamal Woon, 17, a singer, songwriter and producer, landed the contract with Radio 1 DJ Mistajam.

The teen’s songs also gained the attention of DJ Target and Jamz Supernova, also of Radio 1, after Mr Woon sent his song to various music blogs.

Jamal, a music technology student from Colliers Wood, said: “I am absolutely thrilled. The publishing deal will become a platform and an opportunity to become even better.”

He added: “It has been so important for me to study at college.

“My music tutor, Jay Relf, has really taught me the composition of music and different techniques to use really taking my music to the next level.”

Last year Jamal wrote and produced his first single Somebody Else? It has been streamed more than 10,000 times online and played on Radio 1.

Another of the teen’s tracks, Heal You, was featured on Channel 4 and racked up 30,000 streams on his Soundcloud profile.

The talented teen will also perform live with fellow student Mathew Money later this month at SXSW, a major music festival and conference in Austin, Texas.

They will perform as part of the BBC Introducing showcase on March 18.
